Globe and Mail

Located in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood in Toronto, the Globe and Mail Centre is a distinct modern architectural addition to the historic area. Standing taller than any other building on the city block, the centre is seamlessly integrated into its surroundings by keeping the podium the same height as adjacent structures. The tower itself steps back from the street and is comprised of 10 blocks stacked on top of one another. At varying heights and widths, the blocks create an asymmetrical design element and several overhangs around the façade. 

Pro-Bel Technical Solution

We designed an extensive monorail system to service the complicated façade of the building. Several monorails are fitted on levels 6 through 17 on all four sides of the building to ensure safe access beneath overhangs created by the asymmetrically stacked building sections/  blocks. The southwestern corner is servicing by a custom wall mounted rolling davit arm system. The system consists of two roof rigged davit arms that are equipped with electrical / mechanical mechanisms to travers the platform (swing stage) suspended from the roof rigged davits horizontally along the corner of the roof. The remaining sections of the Globe and Mail Centre are serviced by a combination system of davits and roof anchors. Horizontal lifeline (cable) systems provide access to hazard areas where our equipment is located and/or other maintenance is required. Intermittent Stabilization Anchors (ISA’s / stabilization buttons) are located on the facade with varying placement depending each section / block of the building.
